A Splinter In Your Mind

"Why is it when we talk to God we're said to be praying — but when God talks to us, we're said to be schizophrenic?" ~Lily Tomlin

Well Lily Tomlin, it's because science has to butt in and explain everything .. including everything that it can't understand.. Science is afraid to say I don't know.. so Science is paranoid :)

I do believe that we do not always have to make sense.. @ least that is what I tell myself when I do not make sense

Well depends on what "God" is telling u.Ive seen patients say the most absurd things e.g God wants me to sleep with him , God blames me for the middle east turmoil and i have Gods baby. There was also a woman who said she would marry God cuz He had too much acne..Schizophrenia, multiple personality disorders, dissociative disorders and grandeur ary very serious that shouldnt be taken lightly. These patients really need help and may God help them and grant them peace.

Will,
It seems like you are answering a different question.

cleopatrina,
Let's put it this way, if a friend of yours came to you and said "God spoke to me last nigiht." wouldn't you be totally convinced that he's crazy?

Who says that when we talk to God, we're "praying"? Case by case. there is only one official prayer in the Christian part of the Bible, so that left alot to people's individual imagination, and where ever there is a religious vacuum the priests. secondly silence is an answer too. Perhaps a silent prayer is better than most prayers that list alot of personal desires and expectations.

"God talks to us", I don't know if this is true in Islam, but this one of the most heavily used cliches in Christain West. Perhaps I heard it every Sunday of my youth in Bible class, and half as often in the 11AM service. If it were true, we must not be doing a good job of listening. some psychiatrists say schizophrenia is a socially induced disease from contact with a sick society.

no mechanical
i would say she/needs serious help and would talk him into seeing someone unless i call it a bluff.
The word "crazy" is a very cruel word.why cant we call someone with cancer crazy?its a sickness as well..thats why psychiatric patients are afraid to get help..for their reputation

cleopatrina,
That's exactly the point! Why is it that you think they need 'serious help' when 'god talks to them' yet when they 'talk to god' or pray it's normal? Think about it... why do we think that god talking to someone is such an odd thing?

God giving someone signs, sending him him msgs be it subtle or out in the open, guiding him and answering his prayers has never been regarded as odd.Perhaps its the personification of God that strikes us as odd cuz how would u know it really is God thats talking to u?how could u be so sure?and what could He be telling u?
Theres also a different between "God talked to me" and "God talks to me" the former would be regarded as a remote possibility or a truth worth questioning, the latter would most probably be an auditory delusion. All believers believe as well in satin, we cant hear him per say but we do know he hisses stuff in our ears.So is it God or Satin?

Good question, You see it all depends on how much faith in the supernatural you have, we are stereotyped by the notion of prayer to God as something natural, we don’t see God, and all our feelings are self created towards that specific God that the immediate environment created. Therefore; no one questions prayer, it comes natural due to its repetitive pattern. But history, according to religions, had told us that God only talked to special, chosen people of which most came from the same family tree (here I’m talking about the Judeo-Christian religions), so the chances of God talking to a person is at odds most of the time. But mind you, some people do believe others when they say that God spoke to them, or Satan spoke to them. Actually; a lot of people believe that, and that’s why they contact religious mullahs or priests (who are in a closer position to communicate with God) or to magicians (with Satan) for a cure of physical or mental disorders instead of seeing a doctor. And these people are not crazy at all; they only have faith.

Pinky & the Reham,
My job!

cleopatrina,
Why is your 'god or satan' question only limited to 'talkin' and not the subtle signs & guidance?
I read what you said a few times and still can't get an answer out of it.

Ayya,
Okay so what if the Pope said god talked to him? What if the holiest sheikh said god talked to him? Wouldn't you say they're completely nuts?

Why isn't anybody arriving at the same answer as I am???

lol i cant believe i actually spelled satan twice as "satin"lool what kinda prom dress was i thinkin of
back to the answer to ur q.We oughtta just let people be,i mean who cares if someone claims God talked to him or her unless its something insane and incoherent with the teachings of God.Then we would diagnose it as a disease and act accordingly.otherwise, its a matter of personal spirituality or delusion

The people who claim God talks to them, really are people who are talking to themselves, so yes it might be a form of craziness, despite Freud's problems which have been exposed he was right about a few things. A kind of alienation of the consciousness creates an "other" which is invested with a "voice" and "character" depending on the person's desires, which he/she wants to be cut off from. So, this voice can be appointed with "goodness", or evil...it really doesn't matter, this "voice" is both persistent and unrelenting. For the individual, they really don't know where these messages are coming from, but they are coming from within themselves. That is why dream therapy can work for some of these patients.

Hmm.. I don't think I was answering a different question. When we talk to God, we're just performing an act that no one can deny.. we send out messages into the air.. and believe it's to God it hasn't taken a real form of talking to someone.. Science in the form of psychology isn't bothered, but words coming from God bothers Science cause it's an external event and you're receiving something you shouldn't be...it's starting to take reality and psychology can't affort to believe in God.. You see.. Psychology will only believe in God as an imagination, not as something real.. once it becomes real it threatens Science..

I know it's late to explain, but I hope I made my first short comment clearer..
